Tracy, Calif. (June 1st)—Davey Hamilton’s SRL Wild West Shootout visited Altamont Raceway Park Saturday night for there third event of the 2003 racing season. Ron Strmiska Jr of Manteca, California won the 100 lap main event on the half mile track. Dave Byrd finished second, followed by Rick Ruzbarsky, David Philpott, and Jim Courage Jr.

“We had a real good car tonight, we dodged the wrecks and stayed out of trouble. I would like to thank my sponsors, my crew, and the SRL, everyone is doing a great job.” says race winner Ron Strmiska Jr.

“Our car was really, really loose tonight, but I’m happy with second, we can really use this momentum to carry us into Madera.” Said second place finisher Dave Byrd.

Rick Ruzbarsky of Tracy, California paced the field in qualifying with a lap of 18.306 seconds. Dave Byrd was second quick, as he stopped the clock at 18.423 seconds. An eight car invert placed Fremont’s Troy Ermish on the pole for the 100 lap feature. Ermish led the field of 22 cars for the first 19 laps, before spinning coming out of turn two. This opened the door for Ryan Foster to lead the pack. Foster lead until lap 76, when fluid was dropped in the middle of turns one and two, sending the race leader into a spin. The lap 76 caution bunched the field back up for a 21 lap shootout.

Ron Strmiska Jr., was able to hold off Dave Byrd for this second straight victory of 2003.

Jeff Anthony, the 2002 SRL Wild West Shootout Champion, suffered engine problems during practice, and was unable to compete.

The SRL Wild West Shootout will make there first of three stops Saturday June 28th at Madera Speedway’s 1/3 mile racetrack. Strmiska has never won at Madera, but he looks forward to the next race. “It is my goal to win at Madera, I have always ran well there, but never won.”
