Next Sunday's Race Preview

After 60 years of presenting some of the best racing west of the Mississippi, Stockton’s 99 Speedway will cease operations following the 2006 season as the track site is slated for urban development in 2007.

While local racing fans will mourn its loss, promoter Ken Clapp has put together a racing schedule in 2006 that will guarantee the historic ¼ mile bullring will go out with a bang.

The popular Western Late Models will be back as the speedway’s premier class, while the Grand American Modifieds, Pro 4 Trucks and American Limited Stocks will all once again be the regular support classes. Havoline and C.L. Bryant will present the Regular Weekly Racing Series.

The track has teamed up with CALIFORNIA HOTWOOD, along with associate sponsors JM ENVIRONMENTAL and HAVOLINE, for the “HOTWOOD 1000” that will consist of ten special 100 lap Western Late Model events throughout the season. In combination with the regular prize fund, the Western Late Model drivers will be competing for approximately $150,000!

The 99 Speedway has always had a great, long standing relationship with CALIFORNIA HOTWOOD and the “HOTWOOD 1000” series within a series promises to add even more excitement and drama to the 2006 season. The late Models drivers and track officials are excited by its prospects.

For the first time in track history Clapp has forged a working relation with Altamont Raceway Park, which was taken over by Riverside Motorsports Park Corporation this past winter. Altamont is currently undergoing $2,000,000 in renovations at the direction of veteran driver Kenny Shepherd, of Merced, the newly installed Altamont General Manager.

“I have known Shepherd since he was a teenager and I have the utmost respect for him,” said Clapp, who was recently inducted into the Motor Sports Press Association Hall of Fame. “I am really enthusiastic about having a nice marriage with Altamont for the first time ever.”

As part of this new relationship, Altamont will shift its regular weekly program to Sunday afternoons this year, allowing drivers to compete at both tracks and dramatically increasing their chances of winning the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series Championship Division II title, which is worth nearly $100,000.

In addition to a fantastic regular weekly lineup, the 99 Speedway will offer up special event after special event this season. The 2006 schedule includes two NASCAR Grand National West Series races (April 29 and August 5), a NASCAR Southwest Tour event (July 15); USAC/BCRA Midgets & USAC/CASA sprints (April 22 and July 8), West Car Late Models (April 2, May 27, July 1 and September 2), Davey Hamilton’s Wild West Shootout (September 16); a full fledged Destruction Derby (August 12) and the fan favorite School Bus Race & Destruction Derby (September 16).

Fans can get sneak preview of things to come at three Saturday afternoon Play Days on March 18, March 25 and April 1. Pit registration begins at 10 AM, inspections at 11 AM and drivers can practice from 1 PM to 5 PM. The grandstands open at noon and admission is free.

In addition, the 99 Speedway will once again play host the Competition and Exotic Car show on Sunday March 26 from 11 AM to 4 PM at the 99 Speedway Souvenir Shop located at 6315 Pacific Avenue. It’s a chance for the fans to get up close and personal with some of their favorite drivers and cars. In addition, the Coors Light Girls will be on hand and Royce’s will be serving up their delicious BBQ. The event goes on rain or shine and admission is free.

After that, its time to get down to business. On April 2 the 2006 season kicks off with the traditional Sunday afternoon opener featuring Round #1 of the “HOTWOOD 1000” for the Western Late Models, a 100 lap West Series race, the American Limited Stock Cars and Pro 4 Trucks.

Following the opener the track will revert to its traditional Saturday night program for 21 dates, culminating in the final race on September 16.

It is going to be a great season, a celebration of 60 years of racing history.
