Grand National 2007 Schedule and New Set-Up
Gaylord Shines in Fourth Trip to Toyota All-Star
Showdown
IRWINDALE,
Calif. — An enthusiastic veteran of the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone
West Series has shown that talent and experience can shine while racing with
teams with much larger budgets.
Scott Gaylord, 48, of Lakewood, Colo., is completing his 16th consecutive season
as a full-time AutoZone West Series competitor. He and his Oliver Gravity
Separators Chevrolet team finished fifth in the NASCAR Grand National Division
portion of the 2005 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.)
Speedway.
He says he did it with great difficulty, and he worked hard for it.
“It was pretty much a struggle the whole weekend, but everything seemed to come
together at the end,” Gaylord recalled. “I had a little bit of help from some
beating and banging in the field. Our car came along and got really strong. With
one more yellow we might have made it up to third.
“We’ve always run very well at Irwindale. We finished third in an AutoZone West
Series race at here earlier this year.”
The track’s generous width and multiple degrees of banking allows good handling
cars to show maximum performance with the right drivers behind the wheel.
“At Irwindale, you can start anywhere and finish up front. It’s a three groove
track so there’s always somewhere to race,” Gaylord said. “I think that’s part
of the reason this event is here. Everyone has a chance of doing well.”
Gaylord has finished as high as fourth in AutoZone West Series points, and was
seventh in the final 2006 standings.
“This year we had a blown engine at Phoenix and there were a lot of cars there.
We were the first ones out and that killed us in points. If we had finished
fifth or sixth in that race we might have finished third in points. That shows
how close the competition is. We had our ups and downs. We finished second in
our last event. It’s our 12th time we’ve finished in the top-10 in series points
and we’re pretty proud of that.”
Gaylord has been reassessing his team’s direction, and his thought process has
accelerated with the departure of his long-time sponsor Oliver Gravity
Separators.
“We’ve been thinking about our future, and with Oliver leaving after 20 years,
we’ve been thinking about restructuring. We’ve enjoyed a great relationship with
Oliver all these years and we’re sad to see them go. But we may do a shorter
program and hit some events a little harder. If we’re able to partner with
another primary sponsor and have a proper budget to do the testing and update
some equipment we can continue to run the full schedule. Whatever number of
races we do, we are going to do them right.”
Without a large budget, Gaylord relies on a dedicated team and his two decades
of experience. Taking care of his equipment might come at a cost of being a
little less aggressive in some situations. In the big picture, saving the car
means he’ll be able to make the next race.
“If you have the experience and the budget, then you can really shine as a
driver and as a team,” Gaylord said.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Oct. 20, Gaylord’s son, Ryan, celebrated his 17th birthday
while working on his father’s crew at Irwindale. Scott made sure his son had the
gift he really wanted: a fitted racing helmet.
“He’s been on the crew most of the year and he’s been doing a great job,”
Gaylord said. “I’ve been doing a little go cart racing and he’s started beating
me, and I think he has some ability. He’s tested in a Late Model and run fast
enough to qualify.”

HOLMES GETS PAST DAVID ON FINAL LAP IN TEXAS FOR 1ST CAREER
WIN IN NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, AUTOZONE WEST SERIES
KYLE, Texas (Sept. 30, 2006) – Eric Holmes and Mike David have battled back-and-forth for the championship this year in the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series. Their season-long duel played out again as they ran door-to-door and swapped the lead multiple times in the Allstate Texas Thunder 200 at Thunder Hill Raceway on Saturday, Sept. 30.
Holmes ultimately prevailed – as contact between the two on the last lap left David spinning, while Holmes slipped by for his first career series win and a 47-point lead in the championship standings.
Although registering his first victory, Holmes expressed regret afterward about the contact between the two as they charged past a lapped car on the final lap. “I was a little disappointed in the way it all ended up,” he said. “I got a good run off of (turn) two. It was back out or go for it and hopefully the lapped car would give us room, but he didn’t. I apologize. I didn’t want to win one like that. Mike and I are good friends. He’s probably going to be mad.”
The race winning pass by Holmes marked the 13th lead change of the event as competitors throughout the field battled for every bit of prime real estate on the tight 3/8-mile South Texas track. “It’s a lot of fun racing each other like that, but it’s pretty serious,” Holmes said. “I’m proud of my whole team. They’ve done a great job and this one’s for them.”
Holmes won by a margin of 6.225 seconds, at an average speed of 61.927 mph. He netted $6,862 in prize money and posted awards for the win. Despite a spin just before the midway point of the race, series rookie Brian Ickler of San Diego, Calif., was able to charge back to the front in his McMillin Homes/NAPAFILTERS.COM Chevrolet to claim second – matching his career-best finish. He was followed across the line by two series veterans. Austin Cameron of El Cajon, Calif., was third in the RaceCarFans.com Chevrolet – followed by Johnny Borneman of Ramona, Calif., in the Borneman Plastering/Red Line Oil Ford. David, meanwhile, recovered from his last lap incident to finish fifth. The Modesto, Calif., competitor had started his evening off by winning his first career Budweiser Pole Award – with a qualifying lap of 89.994 mph in the Bennett Lane Winery Ford. Rounding out the top 10 in the race finish was Steve Portenga, Tim Woods III, Mike Duncan, Giuliano Losacco and Eric Hardin.
David led the most laps, running out front for 111 laps, compared to 87 for Holmes. Series rookie Peyton Sellers was the only other driver to lead the event, leading two circuits. His night ended, however, when he was swept up in a multi-car incident just before midway in the race.
The pace of the event was slowed by eight cautions for 48 laps.
With his win, Holmes padded his lead in the championship standings over David – 1,724 to 1,677. Duncan is third with 1,616 – followed by Portenga with 1,590 and Sellers with 1,567. Sixth through 10th in the points are Jim Inglebright with 1,507, Scott Gaylord with 1,474, Ickler with 1,449, Cameron with 1,446 and Borneman with 1,404.
Despite being sidelined early, Sellers was able to maintain his lead in the challenge for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award. He leads with 93 points over Justin Lofton at 87, Ickler at 86 and Hardin at 76. Others rookies this year include Daniel DiGiacomo at 29, James Bruncati at 20, Eric Humphries at 16, Brian Pannone at 16, Spencer Clark at 14, Justin Fisher at eight, Travis Powell at six and Ed Watson at two.
The NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series will conclude its 2006 championship season at Altamont Motorsports Park near Tracy, Calif., on Oct. 15.
Ø First career win … Eric Holmes (No. 62 Sunoco Race Fuels/Paul Oil Chevrolet) scored his first career win in the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series with a victory in the Allstate Texas Thunder 200 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Kyle, Texas, on Sept. 30. Holmes, who set a new record with an average speed of the race at 61.927 mph, became the ninth different winner in 11 series races this season. Prior to his win, the Escalon, Calif., driver had four runner-up finishes this season.
Ø Veteran nabs first Budweiser Pole … Series veteran Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) won his first series Budweiser Pole Award and set a track record with a qualifying lap of 89.994 mph in Texas. He became the eighth different driver to set the fast mark in 11 races this season.
Ø High marks … Series rookie Brian Ickler (No. 20 McMillin Homes/NAPAFILTERS.COM Chevrolet) came home second in Texas to match his career-best mark of earlier in the season when he had a runner-up finish at Sonoma.
Ø Solid performances for pair of newcomers … Two newcomers to the series had good finishes in Texas. Making his second series start, Giuliano Losacco (No. 07 Inforshop/StockCar Brazil Chevrolet) finished ninth. Mark Schulz (No. 33 Schulz Racing Pontiac) took 11th in his series debut, meanwhile.
Ø One race left to decide the title … With his win, Eric Holmes extended his lead in the championship standings to 47 points over Mike David – 1,724 to 1,677 – as the series prepares to head to Altamont Motorsports Park on Oct. 15 for the final championship event of 2006. Going into the final event a year ago, Scott Lynch led Mike Duncan by 41 points. Duncan overcame the deficit, however, to win his second consecutive title.
Ø POWERade Power Move … Mark Schulz garnered the POWERade Power Move of the Race Award in Texas. He moved forward from 21st on the grid to finish 11th. At each Grand National Division event, POWERade presents the award to the driver who advances the most positions.

‘ROAD TO THE SHOWDOWN’
A glance at the Top 15 drivers in the
NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Sept. 13, 2006) – The following is a glance at the current top 15 drivers in the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series championship standings. The top 15 drivers from each series in the NASCAR Grand National Division – the AutoZone West Series and the Busch East Series – will be invited to compete in the fourth annual NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown at Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway on Oct. 20-21. The event awards nearly $500,000 to competitors and will be televised nationally on SPEED.
No. 1 – Eric Holmes, Escalon, Calif. (No. 62 Sunoco Race Fuels/Paul Oil Chevrolet), Beebe Racing Enterprises. Points: 1,539. Holmes, in his first full season of competition in the AutoZone West Series, has been locked in a fierce battle for the title all season. In addition to challenging for the AutoZone West Series championship, he is also in contention for the title in the NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Southwest Series. He is on pace to be the first driver to simultaneously gain invitations in both divisions for the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown. He won the Elite portion of the post-season event in 2004.
No. 2 – Mike David, Modesto, Calif. (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford), Lynch Racing. Points: 1,512. David is having a career-best season – with two wins and is second in the championship standings, just 27 points out of the lead. The next event on the series schedule is the Allstate Texas Thunder 200 at Thunder Hill Raceway in Kyle, Texas. David finished fifth in the inaugural visit there last season. He has competed in two NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns (2005, 2004).
No. 3 – Mike Duncan, Bakersfield, Calif. (No. 9 Lucas Oil/Ron’s Rear Ends Chevrolet), MB Duncan Motorsports. Points: 1,474. Duncan, shooting for a third consecutive championship, is coming off a major victory at California Speedway. He moved to third in the standings and is only 65 points out of first. To keep any title hopes alive, he will need to avoid mechanical troubles that sidelined him in Texas last year. Duncan is one of only four series drivers to compete in all three previous NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns.
No. 4 – Peyton Sellers, Danville, Va. (No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts/ NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet), Bill McAnally Racing. Points: 1,447. The national champion in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series for 2005, Sellers joined the AutoZone West Series ranks this season as part of the Richard Childress Racing driver development program with Bill McAnally Racing. He scored his first career series win midway through the season at Roseburg, Ore.
No. 5 – Steve Portenga, Sparks, Nev. (No. 77 King Taco/Signco Ford), Performance Motorsports. Points: 1,440. Despite a solid sixth-place finish at Fontana, Portenga was not able to gain any ground in his pursuit of the championship. He is fifth in the standings, 99 points back. Portenga hopes to trim that margin by repeating the victory he scored in last year’s inaugural series visit to Texas. He has competed in two NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns (2005, 2003).
No. 6 – Jim Inglebright, Fairfield, Calif. (No. 1 Jelly Belly Chevrolet) Roadrunner Performance Motorsports, Points: 1,380. Inglebright, who returned to the AutoZone West Series full-time this season after limited competition the past two years, is coming off a season-best runner-up finish at Fontana. He will be making his first visit to Thunder Hill Raceway. Inglebright has competed in one NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown (2003).
No. 7 – Scott Gaylord, Lakewood, Colo. (No. 00 Oliver Gravity Separators/Denver Seminary Chevrolet), Scott Gaylord Racing. Points: 1,353. Gaylord finished eighth at Fontana, his eighth top-10 finish of the season. He had a strong showing last year in Texas – winning the Budweiser Pole and finishing third. Gaylord is one of only four series drivers to compete in all three previous NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns.
No. 8 – Austin Cameron, El Cajon, Calif. (No. 88 RaceCarFans.com Chevrolet) MRG Motorsports. Points: 1,281. Cameron returned to series competition in 2006 after being out of action for a year. He joined with car owner Mark Golembeski and the MRG Motorsports team, which had a runner-up finish in Texas last year with driver David Gilliland. Cameron won the inaugural NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown in 2003.
No. 9 – Brian Ickler, San Diego, Calif. (No. 20 McMillin Homes/NAPA FILTERS.COM Chevrolet), Bill McAnally Racing. Points: 1,279. Ickler, one of several talented young rookies contending for the Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award, has turned in some strong performances this year – finishing as high as second at Sonoma. He is coming off a seventh-place finish at Fontana, as the series heads to the Lone Star state.
No. 10 – Justin Lofton, Westmorland, Calif., (No. 66 Bob Lofton Cattle Feeding Investments Chevrolet), Justin Lofton Racing, Points: 1,276. Lofton is another of the young guns of the series in contention for this year’s Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award. After being caught up in an incident at Fontana, Lofton is hoping to bounce back with a strong showing in Texas.
No. 11 – Johnny Borneman, Ramona, Calif. (No. 8 Borneman Plastering/Red Line Oil Ford) Borneman Motorsports, Points: 1,244 Borneman returned to running a full schedule in the AutoZone West Series this season, after competing in selected events in recent years. The second-generation driver scored his third career series win at Monroe in July. Borneman has raced in two NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns (2005, 2003).
No. 12 – Andrew Myers, Huntington Beach, Calif., (No. 44 Toyota of Escondido Chevrolet), Myers Racing, Points: 1,132. Myers had a great start to this season, winning two of the first three events he raced. He is hoping to finish the season strong. As a series rookie in 2005, one of his best performances resulted in a fourth-place finish in Texas. Myers has competed in one NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown (2005).
No. 13 – Eric Hardin, Anaheim, Calif. (No. 18 Hardin Buick-Pontiac-GMC/DSNTV Chevrolet), Bill McAnally Racing. Points: 1,123. Hardin is another of the talented young rookies learning the ropes of the AutoZone West Series this season. After a 13th-place finish at Fontana, Hardin is preparing for his first visit to Thunder Hill Raceway in Texas.
No. 14 – Tim Woods III, Chino Hills, Calif. (No. 54 Chino Hills Ford Ford), T-III Motorsports. Points: 1,119. Woods is having the kind of year in which his statistics do not reflect how well he has performed. He has led laps in four events this year – including Irwindale, where he led the most laps. Engine problems last year in Texas left him to finish 12th. Woods has competed in two NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns (2005, 2004).
No. 15 – Jack Sellers, Sacramento, Calif., (No. 15 Aramark Pontiac), Sellers Racing, Points: 1,093. Sellers surpassed a career milestone earlier this year, making his 200th career start in the series. He heads to Texas, hoping to avoid mechanical trouble that sidelined him in last year’s event. Sellers is one of only four series drivers to compete in all three previous NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdowns.
ON THE BUBBLE: Brett Thompson, Jerome, Idaho, (No. 61 Rich Thompson Trucking Chevrolet) Thompson Motorsports, Points: 1,064. Thompson is just 29 points out of the top 15, with two races remaining. He is coming off a top-five finish at Fontana. If Thompson fails to make it into the top 15, it could bring to a close his streak of three consecutive appearances in the NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown.
MIKE DAVID EDGES ERIC HOLMES IN THRILLING FINAL VISIT TO STOCKTON
IN NASCAR GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION, AUTOZONE WEST SERIES
STOCKTON, Calif. (Aug. 5, 2006) – This year’s see-saw battle for the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series championship between two drivers from California’s Central Valley played out on their home track in thrilling fashion on Saturday night as Mike David and Eric Holmes swapped the lead back-and-forth in hopes of winning the final series race at Stockton 99 Speedway.
David prevailed in the Dodge Country 200 by Havoline and NAPA Belts & Hose, giving him a sweep of both series visits to the quarter-mile oval this season and a slim five-point advantage in the championship standings.
The two drivers – both second generation competitors at Stockton – had entered the event tied for first in points. Each had hopes of victory in the final series visit to the speedway, which is slated to close at the end of the season.
“Eric’s a heck of a racer. I think we just had a better car on long runs,” David said afterward. “He was most certainly quicker on short runs. It worked out good for us at the end.”
Holmes, who started off the event by winning the Budweiser Pole Award with a qualifying lap of 63.501 mph, led the first 55 laps before David briefly edged ahead after a lap 56 restart. The pair ultimately traded the lead five times, with David gaining the lead for the final time on a lap 144 restart.
“I think we just got a little better jump on him,” David said. “The cars were so equal. If he would have beat me on the start, I don’t know if I would have got back around him. It’s easier to drive when you’re out front, you’re timing is better and everything.”
David of Modesto, Calif., driver crossed the finish line in his Bennett Lane Winery Ford with a margin of victory of 1.260 seconds. He netted $9,491 in prize money and posted awards. It marked David’s fourth career series win, with three of those victories coming at Stockton. His other win was also bittersweet, as he captured the victory in the final series event at Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif., before its closure last year.
Holmes of Escalon, Calif., was second at Stockton in the Sunoco Race Fuels/Paul Oil Chevrolet. Peyton Sellers of Danville, Va. – who trailed David and Holmes by just 12 points heading to Stockton – took third in the NAPA Auto Parts/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet. Fourth went to Austin Cameron of El Cajon, Calif., in the RaceCarFans.com Chevrolet. Despite an early spin after contact with another car – Scott Gaylord of Lakewood, Colo., was able to battle his way back to take fifth in the Oliver Gravity Separators/Denver Seminary Chevrolet. Rounding out the top 10 were Tim Woods III, Mike Duncan, Steve Portenga, Justin Lofton and Eric Hardin.
David now leads Holmes by five points, 1,374 to 1,369, with nine of 12 races complete this season. Sellers is close behind with 1,342. Portenga is fourth with 1,290, shadowed by Duncan with 1,289. Sixth through 10th in the standings include Gaylord with 1,211, Jim Inglebright with 1,210, Lofton with 1,185, Cameron with 1,158 and Johnny Borneman with 1,150.
Sellers extended his lead in the battle for this year’s Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award. He tops the list with 78 points, followed by Lofton at 72, Brian Ickler with 66 and Eric Hardin with 58. Others include Daniel DiGiacomo at 23, James Bruncati at 20, Eric Humphries at 16, Brian Pannone at 16, Nick Lynch at 15, Spencer Clark at 14, Justin Fisher at eight, Travis Powell at six and Ed Watson at two.
The next event on the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series schedule will be at California Speedway in Fontana, Calif., on Sept. 1.

Ø David collects third and final Stockton win … Mike David (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) won the Dodge County 200 presented by Havoline and NAPA Belts & Hose on his home track at Stockton 99 Speedway in the final visit by the NASCAR Grand National Division, AutoZone West Series to the historic quarter-mile oval in Stockton, Calif. The track is slated to close at the end of the season. The win gave David a sweep of the two series visits this year to Stockton. In addition, three of David’s four overall career series victories came at Stockton. The fourth was the final event before last year’s closure of Mesa Marin Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif.
Ø Holmes nabs another Budweiser Pole … Sharing the spotlight in the final series event on his home track, Eric Holmes (No. 62 Sunoco Race Fuels/Paul Oil Chevrolet) captured his second consecutive Budweiser Pole Award and his third of the season, the most of any drivers in the series this season. He turned in a lap of 63.501 mph during qualifying.
Ø Close to first win, again … Once again, Holmes came close to scoring his first career series win. His second-place finish at Stockton marked his fourth runner-up finish this year.
Ø Championship battle remains close … This year’s championship battle continues to be one of the closest in the history of the series. David has taken a slim five-point margin over Holmes, 1,374 to 1,369; with leading Sunoco Rookie of the Year contender Peyton Sellers (No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts/NAPA Belts & Hose Chevrolet) 32 points back in third.
Ø Point standings differ for car owners … The championship standings among the car owners differs slightly – with Allen Beebe (No. 62 Sunoco Race Fuels/Paul Oil Chevrolet) leading with 1,427 points. Car owner Randy Lynch (No. 2 Bennett Lane Winery Ford) is second with 1,374 and Bill McAnally (No. 16 NAPA Auto Parts/NAPA Belts and Hose Chevrolet) is third with 1,342.
Ø Battle for rookie title … Peyton Sellers continues to lead the challenge for this year’s Sunoco Rookie of the Year Award. Sellers finished third at Stockton. It marked the fifth race this season in which he was the top finishing rookie.
Ø POWERade Power Move … Tim Woods III (No. 54 Chino Hills Ford Ford) captured the POWERade Power Move of the Race Award at Stockton. Woods charged forward from 14th on the grid to finish sixth. At each Grand National Division event, POWERade presents the award to the driver who advances the most positions.
Ø Featherlite Most Improved … In addition to winning the race, Mike David won the Featherlite Most Improved Driver Award at Stockton. David had finished eighth the week before at Monroe. Featherlite presents the award at each event to the driver who improves the most finishing positions from the previous event.
