Haley Nabs Pole, sets new track record
Thorn Dominates, again!

Leader survives 9 restarts

Wild night of racing has plenty of yellow flags

STOCKTON - It was not surprising to see the checkered and yellow flags flying as Derek Thorn crossed the finish line in Saturday night's wild NASCAR K&N Pro Series West 150-lap main event at Stockton 99 Speedway

Thorn took the lead at the start of the race from the outside front row and had to endure nine restarts to capture his first victory of the K&N season series in front of an estimated 1,500 fans.

"Yellows are difficult," said the Lakeport driver.

"You never like to see the yellows when you're leading. It's tough to hold (other drivers) off, but fortunately we had a good enough car to do it tonight, and hopefully it is a sign of things to come."

Cameron Hayley of Calgary, Alberta, earned the pole with his track-record 13.726 seconds qualifying time ahead of Thorn, but the 16-year-old quickly fell behind and chased Thorn throughout the race to end up in third behind Sergio Pena of Winchester, Va.

Eric Holmes of Escalon started in seventh and worked his way up to third on lap 127, but fell back to fifth. Holmes finished second in last year's K&N event in Stockton and was runner-up in 2006 as well for his best finishes.

Pena was fourth throughout the race but took an aggressive dive low to box Hayley and Holmes in traffic on the final restart on the 140th lap to finish second.

"We didn't have the best car tonight," Holmes said. "Everyone was real aggressive on that last restart, and I think I got run over by about three drivers. It was slick out there and it was wild, but it was good. That's short-track racing."

Some 30 cars tried to qualify for the main event but only the top 24 competed.

Joseph Reichmuth of Manteca battled his way from fifth to take the checkered flag in the B-4 30-lap main event to hold off Mark Jacke of Stockton and Brad Mast of Manteca, respectively.

Reichmuth also picked up the dash win ahead of Chris Williams of Ceres and Larry Toon of Modesto.

Jeremy Wood of Tracy took the lead on the fifth restart of the 35-lap Legends main and held off Tony Mangini of Benicia for the victory.

Fred Clement of Stockton grabbed the 20-lap B main victory ahead of Jeff Baxter of Wilton, while Cameron Austin of Santa Rosa got the dash win ahead of Wood.

Jason Philpot of Sacramento took advantage of starting on the outside of the front row to hold off Mike Regelman of Ripon and Nic Romano of Menlo Park in the Modifieds main. Dyllan Capello finished ahead of Romano in the trophy dash.

Racing resumes Saturday evening with AMA Pro GNC twins and singles at the Stockton 99 Dirt Track at the San Joaquin County Fairgrounds.
